Id rather race somebody uphill than risk my life going for that downhill KOM. I run 52/36 now, (with 11-28 on the rear) but used to have 53/39 on my previous bike. The 52/36 is the better allrounder. The only time I run out of gears are on steep descents. In that case, 53/39 would be only fractionally better.

Iknow riders who have 28T in front and 11-36 in back on 29'ers who are fine with 28:11 as high gear. Whereas on a 26'er or even 27.5'er, 28T would be too low. With 1X, there are always trade offs at the high and low ends of your gearing. Except when X=11 because of the incredible range of. SRAM's 11 speed cassette, 10-42.
Withthe 11/32 I can spin up pretty much any hill around, no need to stand with the exception of one that's perhaps 15% grade for quite a ways. The difference between 28 and 32 is really big, 32 puts me at a walking pace I think. The 32 rarely gets used, mostly on recovery days or riding with my kids.
